He's quite childish, when you think about it. It's barely past the emotional maturity of a toddler, but he's far more dangerous.
Wishful thinking, I suppose. But I'm glad you're getting things sorted.
Oh, that's quite clever, actually. A way of kind of getting around it. I suppose it just means we could maybe go back to the drawing board.
He offered me the same deal. I refused outright. Maul reminds me too much of people back home. We call them Death Eaters, dark wizards and witches. They're people who can hurt whoever they want and do whatever they want. A lot of people have died because of them and their leader. But even those people I didn't stand back and do nothing.
He really is. I suppose we shouldn't be surprised he cheated - I guess really, I'm just more surprised he pulled it off.
We'll figure something out, but yeah, that was pretty much what I was aiming for. Something to get him off our backs and still leaves us open to other options to stop him when he makes his move. I'm not standing by and letting him hurt anyone else. He's done more than enough harm already. But there's a lot he doesn't know, or doesn't realize, and I think we can use that to our advantage.
I'm sorry about the Death Eaters you had at home - they sound terrible. There's no shortage of cults and stuff back in my world that are mostly just out to cause harm too, or out for personal gain, but none of them really remind me of Maul.
There was a vampire at home who kind of does, though. He was known for being especially cruel until he got cursed with a soul. He lost it once - he inadvertently found his own cure, and things got bad. Really bad. Cursing him again was the first spell I ever did.
No, I suppose not. None of us expected he might try for some magic of this world to do that, but I suppose Maul really will do anything.
I wonder if maybe we could play him at his own game and ask one of the Patrons for help? I'm not really sure who we could ask, but it's an idea at least.
They're really quite something. Especially considering they're more than willing to hurt or killing children, for one. Maul hits quite close to home sometimes.
It makes me wish we could do something like that, but Maul already has a soul. I'm kind of hoping his friends might actually talk some sense to him. But I feel like it's either that or maybe they might be finally done with him and then there might be nothing holding him back.
Yeah, it might be worth asking for help. I guess it depends on what kind of price they're going to want in return, though. Some of them seem like they might be okay, but I'm still not sure it's a good idea to really trust them, you know?
Yeah, I can see where you're getting a resemblance to Maul from those people. That's terrible. That's why he got mad at me in the first place - he didn't like that I called him out for playing the victim after he attacked Glitch.
I think we've done the next best thing with Maul with that curse, honestly. We gave him a chance to learn to do better, and to feel remorse, and he just threw it back in our faces. I don't know what the solution is now. I mean, warding our homes and waiting for him to decide he's either not angry any more, or angry enough to try something stupid is a pretty short term solution.
I suspect a great deal of blood, more than likely. I performed a ritual to Moon Presence back at the end of December, and I offered her a fair amount of blood from my hands in sacrifice.
[ She'd specifically told Paimon to cut deep. It's Moon Presence, after all. That took a fair amount of healing time, but thankfully the waters of the Salt Lake helped. ]
But I understand what you mean. Pthumerians do work very differently to us and they have very different ideas about 'helping'. At the moment, I think I perhaps only trust Moon Presence, Madam Generosity and Doorway. Perhaps Nevermind, too.
I admit I was a little late to the party concerning what happened to Glitch. I didn't have an excellent history with him. It's... complicated. [ And Glitch has fully owned up to the fact he messed up with that, and completely understands if Luna wants nothing to do with him. At least the boy is far more mature than Maul. ]
I don't either. This is all very frustrating, not knowing what to do next. I suppose all we can do is play things very carefully and then see what else we can come up with.
I just hope he doesn't hurt someone else in the meantime.
Yeah, that's my worry too - that the cost might be too much blood, if you catch my drift. I think I'd trust the Moon Presence. Madam Generosity seems okay too. I'm not sure about the Doorway, but she hasn't done anything to us, really.
[She absolutely does not trust Nevermind after her experiences with the River back in September.]
I had only met Glitch once before that - he was sick, and accidentally summoned some kind of ghoul or something. I can see why not everyone gets along with him, but I think even that considering, no one except for Maul's going to get behind the whole arm chopping thing.
[She has gotten to know him much better since, and with a few glimpses into his life before Deerington and Trench, it hasn't been difficult for her to develop a soft spot for him. She's still not about to pry into what happened between him and Luna.]
Yeah. We'll have to figure something out. I don't know - he might still be all bluster, but that's a pretty big risk to take. He might reconsider too, given how his friends are reacting. I think if he's going to go after anyone outside the three of us, though, it's going to be someone we care about - especially if he thinks it will draw us out. We'll have to be careful to make sure they're protected too.
Doorway's my Patron, so I suppose that's where my trust in them comes from. But I've heard conflicting attitudes to them considering their relationship with The Reckoning.
[ It is... a lot. ]
Not to mention the fact Glitch is still only a teenager. I think he's at least two or three years younger than I am. [ And was even younger than that when Maul attacked him. Even despite their history, going after an actual child is a low blow for Maul. Maybe he knew that himself when Willow called him out. ]
Usagi is sticking by him, I know that much. But given our conversation, she seems to be very hurt and fed up with him. It might be enough for him to stop from just lashing out.
I'm not too worried about Peter getting attacked. Maul has sworn to protect them both, but I think Maul has too much to lose if he attacks him. He's... interested in Peter's demon. I don't think he'll want to do anything that might mean losing any good graces with him.
Yeah, that's right! You had a birthday recently - I'm really sorry I missed it, Luna. Things have been kind of crazy here. Once all this stuff gets settled, though, we'll do like a belated celebration. Maybe you and Peter can come over for dinner with me and Tara or something?
[Glitch's age is a big part of what drew Willow to defend him so vehemently against Maul in the first place. It wasn't as though he attacked an opponent who provoked him that he was on a level field with, he attacked a young boy whom he had a very powerful advantage over.]
Yeah, he was only... either just barely sixteen, or just about sixteen. Buffy's little sister back home is only a year older. She's like a little sister to me, too.
[Not to mention Willow and Tara had unofficially taken over guardianship of the littlest Summers after Buffy's death.]
That's kind of what I'm hoping for, honestly, that all of his friends getting so frustrated with him that he figures out he should back off. I mean, he's threatened me plenty of times since we got here, but he's never followed through with it. It's just a little scarier now that the consequences for trying to hurt us are, less immediate, I guess, is probably the best way to put it?
Maul doesn't know about Tara - I've been really careful to try to keep people from outside our circle knowing about us. I think she's having a hard time getting used to things here. So I'm trying to make extra sure she stays safe. Him being interested in Peter's demon is a little worrying, though. Like, interested how?
Don't worry about it, Willow. I mean that. There's been far more important things going on. It's not the first birthday people have missed because of some situation or another, so I don't mind.
But saying that, I'd love to come over for dinner sometime. I'm sure Peter would too. He's always happy if there's a promise of food. :) [ Peter is still a teenage boy who thinks often with his stomach.
Honestly, that seems to be a running theme with Maul. He seems to attack more teenagers than he does adults. It really says a lot about him, much to Luna's disgust. ]
Yes, I understand what you mean. It does seem a little more... urgent. I think you've been very wise to do that. Poor Tara hasn't been here all that long, has she? It's hard enough being thrown into a new world without possibly being accidentally thrown into this whole mess.
The demon inhabiting Peter is... quite powerful. He might not be at his full strength right now but from my research at his full potential he's not something to be played with. He can grant riches and armour and secret knowledge, and do all sorts of different things. He's really quite amazing.
Maul sensed that power, and while he wants to try and 'help' unleash it, I'm worried it's for his own motives and agendas. That he wants to use the demon. He's messing with things he doesn't truly understand, things he's never even bothered to research or take the time to look into. Initially he wanted to get rid of Peter's spirit and just allow the demon full control. It's what sparked our own feud when I told Maul to back off.
The demon's been used before by people, back in Peter's own world. And I refuse to let that happen again and let him become twisted into something he's not.
Well, birthdays are important too, though! And twenty's a big one - we definitely have to celebrate. So yeah, as soon as this stuff is all over, let's do a dinner for all of us. We've got fresh milk and eggs too - I might even be able to make a cake or something. Besides, it'd be great to be able to have you guys over!
[Tara hasn't been here long at all, and her introduction to Trench has not been terribly gentle. It seems like things just keep getting worse. It feels important to keep trying to draw her into the things here Willow genuinely likes about the city, like the connections she's made with the other Sleepers.]
I don't think under any circumstances it'd be an easy transition for her. I mean, she got here in November, when things were really bad, and there's been pretty much always something going on ever since. Maul's just one more.
And of course he wants anything to do with anything that has any sort of power at all. I guess we probably shouldn't be surprised he's taken an interest in Peter's demon. God, he's such a creep. It doesn't surprise me at all that you telling Maul no is what started your fight with him. He makes me so angry sometimes. He's got no sense of boundaries, or decency at all. It's just all about what he wants, and screw everyone else.
Oh, don't worry about a cake. Peter's demon made me one, and it's actually very good! [ Paimon was excellent in ensuring she had a nice birthday cake for her birthday. It was actually... perfect, on a technical level. Luna was very impressed. ] I've been keeping it magically, so it lasts. Maybe I can bring some slices with me for dessert. :)
[ Paimon has been... very insistent that the cake is only for her. But she can't eat a whole cake herself, thus the need to store is magically. Surely he wouldn't protest Luna sharing it with other witches. ]
Oh, no. At least in Deerington we would have some less awful months. But it doesn't really feel like it's been a simple ride here in Trench, really. Other than January, I suppose.
I suppose when Glitch told me what he motives were in general, it made a lot of sense as to why he was trying to be friendly with the demon — and also try to get rid of Peter. Even when the demon did tell Maul to back down after he refused to listen to me, Maul continued to be horrible to Peter because when Peter's afraid, he's not as strong. [ Meaning Paimon's around more, and Luna's worked so hard just to keep Peter mentally present. Especially when she's been warned by Paimon that Peter might disappear completely one day. ]
Exactly that. I warned him not to interfere with my bond with the demon because that's something you just don't mess around with. At all. But he took it as an insult and decided he'd just do what he wants.
I just... really dislike him.

That sounds great too! We'll make plans as soon as all this stuff with Maul is settled.
Yeah, January as far as the Trench went didn't seem so bad. Lots of weirdness with people changing and stuff. We kind of had our own problems at home, though. It all stemmed from what happened with the blood zealots, though, in November. It sounds like they come around every year too. We'll have to be ready for them next time.
Ugh, of course Maul's going after Peter because of his demon. He's made it pretty clear he doesn't really care about anything unless it benefits him. It amazes me he has as many friends as he does sometimes. How do people stand by someone who does this stuff?
