[Ruby can't help but feel a little worried when she sees the condition that Luna's in. She had been doing her best to be around for anyone that needed help after the Titanic and this just felt like she had neglected someone.]
I'm doing okay. I managed to get off the ship with only a few cuts and bruises. I've been hunkered down with a friend from home too, so we've been watching each others backs here.
What about you? Are you sure you and your friends are okay? Do you need any food or supplies? I could run something over.
[ If anything, Luna was in a similar position to Ruby -- running around helping people. It just... didn't end so well for her. ]
That's good. I'm glad. I know there's been a few Sleepers who haven't been so fortunate.
[ She... doesn't think it best to let her know about her own fate on the ship. Luna has no problems in talking about death, certainly. But trying to navigate through her own death and how to really talk about it is providing tricky -- she's still just trying to... put herself back together, really. ]
We're alright, thank you. That's very kind of you, though. [ Honestly, she's touched by the kind thought. She huffs out a small laugh. ] I'm very fortunate enough to have three adult wizards as my friends from home. They're looking after me. It's... a bit like having a lot of dads.
[Death was a possibility in her line of work. She had seen it happen before with Pyrrha and Penny. While she wasn't sure of the exact details she had no doubt her mother could have passed trying to help someone else out as well. She wasn't sure but it was a thought that brought her a bit of comfort.
She tended not to let the thought of it happening to her stop her.]
...I've heard that from a few people. All the more reason we have to stick together now. If we're lucky we can avoid anything like what happened on the ship.
[She matches that laugh with a cheeky smile.]
Hey. I wasn't kidding at the dance. This is kind of my job back home. I'm a Huntress, or a Huntress-in-training technically because I never graduated. I'm kind of a professionl helper outer.
[Don't mind her as she tries to play down what she does.
Because it's going to be thrown out the window as her eyes go wide when Luna mentions wizards.]
Wait! Wizards like spellcasters? Like magic!? Actual magic!? They can just do that!? That's so cool.
Wow.
[Okay. She may have got a little excited there. Give her a second to breath.]
-I mean that's cool. It sounds like you're in good hands. It's always good to know that you've got family watching your back.
A Huntress. [ Luna's eyes are wide. She likes the sound of that. Although she's curious as to what that actually means asides from 'professional helper outer'. ] What else does that mean you do? Other than coming to one's aid?
[ Luna watches her with subdued amusement, smiling cheerfully. It's funny, sometimes, the different kinds of reactions she gets to being magic, or mentioning magic. But this one, she likes it. ]
Yes, actual magic. It's very much alive in my world. I am in good hands. And my own too, actually.
[ She waves at the screen, smiling faintly. Yes, hello. She's also a magic user. A bit... out of magic, right now. But she's still a witch. ]
What else? Oh, right. Not every world is quite like mine. I'm still getting the hang of that.
[She taps her chin in thought, thinking of how best to describe it.]
So my worlds filled with monsters. They're called the creatures of Grimm, or just Grimm. They're drawn to the negative emotions humans feel and basically kill for the sake of it. Huntsman and Huntresses are trained to be the best of the best so that we can protect those who can't protect themselves and fight off the Grimm.
We're encouraged to not serve any one particular kingdom and have the freedom to travel through the four doing what we can to assist. There are job boards set up to make it easier for people to get in touch with us.
I've wanted to be one ever since I was little. My dad and Uncle have both been teachers at academies and my mom was one too.
[She trails off at the mention of her mom, but quickly picks herself up to continue.]
So basically monster hunter might be the easiest way to put it, but it doesn't sound anywhere near as romantic as a Huntress and it doesn't quite cover everything I could do either.
[Her eyes go wide focusing back in when Luna says that she's capable of magic too.]
Seriously, you too? You are going to have to show me sometime! Promise?
We only have a little bit of it back where I'm from. I think there's a grand total of ...eight people who can pull it off? But most people are under the impression it just never existed in the first place.
[ Luna's quiet as she listens, head tilting to the side. Her eyes slowly widen as Ruby goes on — quietly enthralled, in all honesty. This sounds so fascinating! And Luna likes the idea of all the travelling. ]
That sounds so exciting though! Getting to travel the world and do some good in it. It's a shame these are monsters, though. But sometimes I suppose there's always monsters that have to be fought.
[ And doesn't Luna know that one. ]
I don't mind showing you. I promise! Maybe when we get back to Deerington? Something's happening in Rapture that's blocked all our powers from us. We can't really do much magic.
[ They're all pretty much Muggles down here. But they're making do. ]
Really? That's such a small amount, though. We have whole communities all over the world! Although most of the world doesn't know we exist though. We live in secrecy, you see. When non-magical people at large find out magic exists, things get a bit complicated.
Honestly the travel has been great. I've got to travel between two continents and before I ended up here I was on my way to a third. And the Grimm are trouble but that's why they have groups like my team around.
We're not at a hundred percent official yet, but we're definitely living the life.
[She looks a little disappointed at the fact that Luna can't show her any magic, but she certainly understands.]
That makes sense, my aura and semblance aren't working here either. So you aren't alone there. We'll both have to show off what we can do when we get back there.
[She shrugs softly.]
From what I understand there were humans before that could do it but they were wiped out ages upon ages ago. Now we've mostly got us non-magical humans around along with the few exceptions but that's complicated.
[It's weird when she thinks about it. She's managed to find out more about her worlds history than anyone else around. If only she had any idea how to really describe it.]
Oh that's really neat! So you're kind of like undercover when you go out into the non-magical huh?
I'd like to do that, one day. Travel. I'm interested in creatures, animals. I'd like to travel all over the world and look for them so I can study them. [ Essentially, continue the very important work Newt began. ] Do you have to do something special to become 'official'?
[ Luna tilts her head when Ruby mentions having some kind of issue with her own powers too, her brow furrowing slightly. She doesn't know what these 'aura' or 'semblance' abilities are — but she's very intrigued.
She'd like to find out, though. She likes finding out about different kinds of powers and magic. ]
That would be nice, I'd like that!
[ She can understand magical people being wiped out. It's happened in her own world, too. Hundreds of years ago now — the very reason why her kind did go into hiding. To protect both wizarding communities and the poor Muggles who were hurt in the process. ]
A bit like that, yes. Only it's not as easy as you think it might be. [ It's a struggle for a long of wizards unused to the non-magical world. ] Muggles, non-magical people, have different technologies and such. All their things run on electricity, like in Deerington.
I'd highly recommend it. I just hope you get to do it under better circumstances then I did. I like the idea of studying animals way better then trying to find the culprits who left your school in ruins.
There's a licencing exam I can take at some point. Since I've already had some training and more unofficial on the job training, I should be good when I get the chance to go for it.
[She gives a knowing sort of nod when she explains that.]
Oh? Do you guys run on Dust by chance? That's what we use in our world. It's what we use where I'm from. I think it's a bit more straight forward then this electricity stuff? At least from what I've seen.
Your school? [ In ruins? Luna inhales softly, eyes widening. Oh, that one definitely pulls at her. Luna hasn't been back at Hogwarts for some time, but she knows fine well her school hasn't been the same since Dumbledore died -- and it can only have gotten worse in her absence. ] What happened?
Training and experience is invaluable! Don't get me wrong, theory is very important too-- [ She's still a Ravenclaw, after all. ] But it would definitely help you, absolutely!
Dust? Mm, no. [ She's not heard of that one before. But she's curious. ] We run everything on magic. Is Dust like that?
[Ruby catches the way Luna's eyes widen and finds herself shrugging softly.]
It was a planned attack. There's a tournament held every few years at one of the schools. It was our turn this time around. A group pretending to be students from one of the other Academies infiltrated our school and used the event to cause a panic and attract the Grimm and bring down Beacon. It's more complicated then that but that's the basics.
Once I got back on my feet I left to go track down the people that did it. I've been on the road ever since.
Well maybe when I get home and get to Atlas I'll give it a shot and see if I can make the title official. It would definitely be cool.
Kind of? It's a stone that can be ground into powder. Raw dust tends to be a single element like fire or lightning, but it can be combined to have a variety of different effects. Basically everything in our world is powered by the stuff.
It's kind of like magic but it has more predictable effects when used.
That sounds awful, though. I'm so sorry, Ruby. School is supposed to be a place of safety, you know?
[ But she... gets it. It's not always like that. It's still terrible when it happens, regardless. ]
So you're still in the middle of that now? Finding the people responsible? [ She understands that one, too. She goes quiet for a moment, her lips pursing. ] Doesn't sound too different to my world, really.
So it's something tangible? That's so fascinating! Magic for us when we use to power things, it's not some kind of energy you can feel in that way. It's just... there. But it's something that comes from within us, I suppose really we're the ones powering things.
It is... Which is one of the reasons I think it was targeted. What are the future protectors of our world if they can't protect themselves, right?
[She knew there was more to it then that. But it was the easy way to focus on just what had happened.]
Basically! Or well... I was a little side tracked before I got here to be honest. I have something they want so I'm trying to get that somewhere safe. But I'm guessing the item must still be back in my world. I haven't seen it anywhere since I arrived.
[Little did she know the lamp was laying on her bed back in Deerington. It just hadn't ended up in her luggage aboard the Titanic.]
Yeah! The bullets my scythe uses are filled with them. If we get somewhere safe where I can take some apart I can show you.
Oh! That's so cool~! You're like a super powerful battery or something.
I wonder if that's how the magic people in my world work. I've never really had a chance to ask them.
